Anagrams

Aloha Folks,

Let’s take a look at anagrams today. An anagram is a word, phrase, or sentence formed from another by rearranging its letters e.g. “Angel” is an anagram of “glean.”

I am giving the rearranged word(s) and the meaning of the original word. You need to work out what the original word is.
Note: If you are submitting the form you need to input your name without fail.

Have fun

Ciao
Gautam

Anthropology

Startle

Republic

Doctrine

Manuscript

Powered by Google Docs

The first five all correct entries were:
1. Nishant
2. Meet
3. Cherry
4. Akshay Vannery
5. Ashish

Honourable mention:
Jinse Thomas - It was Manuscript not Manuscripts. :-(
Noel - You got the spelling of anthropology wrong. :-(

Group Discussion - Current Affairs

Hi Guys,

Time for another GD. This time let’s concentrate on current affairs and what is more current than the entire IPL-Pak players fiasco.

The topic is:

Did the IPL teams snub Pakistan by not picking any of their players?

Looking forward to a great discussion.

Group Discussion - Abstract Topic

Dear Friends,

Quite some vibrant discussions in the previous two discussions, I must say. I have not commented on the first discussion but have done so in the second. However my feedback has been general in nature rather than personal. I will try to give individual feedback as well from now on.

We have had a couple of general topics and I thought that I would add an abstract topic to the mix.

Today’s topic is:

The number of cockroaches in your kitchen represents the economic prosperity of your nation.

Once again looking forward to a high level of participation,

Ciao

Update: (Jan 21 12.03 pm) Some comments posted on the discussion thus far

Group Discussion - General Topic

Hi Folks,

That was a good start to the GD round. At the time of writing this post there are 14 comments on the previous topic. I would of course prefer greater participation but the start is quite good. I am not closing the discussion when another topic is posted so feel free to contribute to the previous discussion(s) too.

Now I want to know from you guys, especially the ones who have already posted and who intend to do so in the future, is how do you want me to participate? If at all…. ;-)

What I mean to ask is:

Do you want me to give you feedback on your comments?

or

Do you want me to participate in the discussion?

or

Do you want me to do neither?

I am fine with any of those roles, particularly the last one. ;-)

Now for today’s topic:

Is the Internet more of a bane than a boon?

Ciao

Update: I have posted my general feedback in the Comments Section. Feel free to revert to me right here in case you want/need something else.

Group Discussion - General Topic

Aloha Guys,

It is GD/PI season once again and I thought I would use the Blog to try to have some GDs. Let’s see if the experiment is successful.

I will post one topic every day and after reading the same, put down points that you would make in a normal GD. Obviously you will have to put down the points in the Comments section. Before making those comments it would make sense to take a look at the points that the others have made. Your points could be in response to those points or they could be stand alone ones.

This is open to all students and is not restricted only to the CAT 09/CET 10 students.

The first topic is:

"Creation of smaller states is the only way forward to ensure social and economic development in India."

Looking forward to a vibrant discussion,

Ciao

Native American Words

Aloha Friends,

Here we go with the next series of posts. Hoping to be more regular than last time. Ok … ok I can almost sense a whole lot of you smirking at that statement but this time I mean to keep the resolution. Hopefully. ;-)

Wigwam

An American Indian dwelling, usually of rounded or oval shape, formed of poles overlaid with bark, mats, or skins.

Etymology: Wigwam comes from the Native American language Algonquian. The root is wik "to dwell," to which suffixes are added. Wigwam means "their dwelling".

Totem

A natural object or an animate being, as an animal or bird, assumed as the emblem of a clan, family, or group.

Anything serving as a distinctive, often venerated, emblem or symbol.

Etymology: From the word odoodeman in the Native American language Algonquian. Odoodeman means "his sibling kin, his group or family," hence, "his family mark"

Barbecue

An outdoor meal, usually a form of social entertainment, at which meats, fish, or fowl, along with vegetables, are roasted over a wood or charcoal fire.

Etymology: The word "barbecue" came into English via the Spanish, who adopted the term from the Arawak Indians of the Caribbean, to whom the barbacoa was a grating of green wood upon which strips of meat were placed to cook or to dry over a slow fire.

Hammock

A hanging, easily swung length of canvas or heavy netting suspended between two trees or other supports and used as a seat or bed.

Etymology: From the Spanish word hamaca which itself was taken from the Arawakan. The word apparently meaning "fish nets".

Skookum

Large; powerful; impressive. Excellent; first-rate.

Etymology: The word originates from skwekwem which meant ghost, spirit, monster and hence “fearsome” and “powerful”.

Until tomorrow,

Ciao

And I am back

Aloha Folks,

A very Happy, Successful and Rockin New Year to all you folks.

It has been a long long time since I mailed you last. A host of you have already taken the CAT and other exams and have had fun or otherwise while doing so. We now have a new batch that is all set to follow in your footsteps.

And during the time I was AWOL interesting things have happened in Copenhagen, to Woods I meant of the Tiger variety and we seem on the cusp of another state in the Indian Union. Quite a lot to miss out on by not sending across emails. ;-) I feel like a Rip Van Winkle.

A quick reason to why I stopped sending these mails. I fell ill and was quite unwell for about a week and once I recovered I fell LAZY. It took quite a while to re-charge myself.

Anyway down to brass tacks.

First up since a majority of you are already through with CAT and a few other exams please let me know if you are still interested in receiving these emails. If you are not interested just reply to this mail with a one word message – “unsubscribe”. That would do. I will pull you out of the mailing list. Of course, if you are still interested in receiving the emails I would be delighted to send them across to you.

Hmmmm …. Now that I have returned what do I start out with? Aah ….. er … um… Man I am blank.

How about the word “return” itself. Let’s explore that.

Return:

Coming again

Synonyms:

homecoming, hark back, reappearance, rebound, recoil, recompense, recrudescence, recurrence, reestablishment, reinstatement, rejoinder, reoccurrence, replacement, restitution, restoration, reversion, revisitation.

Return:

Earnings, Benefit

Synonyms:

accrual, accruement, advantage, avail, compensation, gate, income, interest, lucre, proceeds, profit, reciprocation, recompense, reimbursement, reparation, repayment, requital, results, retaliation, revenue, reward, take, takings, yield

Return:

Answer

Synonyms:

antiphon, comeback, rejoinder, reply, respond, response, retort, riposte

Return:

Summary

Synonyms:

account, form, list, record, report, statement, tabulation

And finally, an idiom:

Do a Melba

To make repeated farewell appearances ( Australian slang)

From Dame Nellie Melba, stage name of Helen Porter Mitchell (1861-1931), an Australian operatic soprano who conducted a series of "farewell" appearances. In effect returning from retirement again and again.

On that note
