Group Discussion - Current Affairs

Hi Guys,

Time for another GD. This time let’s concentrate on current affairs and what is more current than the entire IPL-Pak players fiasco.

The topic is:

Did the IPL teams snub Pakistan by not picking any of their players?

Looking forward to a great discussion.

  1. Yes, I feel that the Pakistani players have been snubbed by the IPL.
The Pakistan players have played well in the short version of cricket. They are the current Twenty20 world champions. The highest wicket taker in the first IPL was Sohail Tanveer. Moreover, the likes of Shahid Afridi and Umar Gul are very good in T20s
So, its certain that the Pakistan players have not been selected because of their lack of performance or lack of talent. Its a shame because Cricket is a game which has managed to cross all kinds of barriers till now.

  2. The IPL franchisee owners are here to make profit. The Pakistani players if were taken would have invited a lot of controversy considering the different political stance prevailing in our country. Thus even after investing in pak players there would not b a guarenteed ROI and anything that that does not sale will certainly not be taken. Also ipl bosses dont want to invoke security problems because of pakistani players given that they had to shift the venue due to security concerns last year.

But having no takers for pak players was humiliating for them. But 1 needs to remember fact that pakistan had not sent their players for last season and there was no uproar to it.

Pak officials are trying to give a political turn to this but they need to consider that the Indian government had no take on it.

  3. well they got snub because of their shallow knowledge of what IPL was . what they thought it was just money and one of GOI intiative they never thought even for once that it's simply a commercial venture not a BCCI(GOI represenatitive)odi series .
And if you are high risk proposition than your chances are pretty dimm to get selected. of course the spirit of game is hurt but at the end of day security issues return on investment weigh heavy on franchises mind than their any love of cricket . Franchise entered IPL to make money not social service or for indo -pak ties.

and SM krishna rightly said that PAKISTAN should be rational enuf to draw line.

pakistan establishment is simply milking in this controversy becoz people of pakistan are fed up of it's adminstration and by fanning anti india sentiment once again they can regain sympthy level. well point is very simple for pakistan to be united they all need to hate india together otherwise there is no adhesive force as such.

  4. Pakistan players are right in their reaction to feel betrayed coz if IPL franchise were not interested to buy them they shloud have stated it categorically First IPL administration created so much hoopla that the Pakistan players are to late to apply and they wont get their visas on time after that was sorted out by Pakistan board now they are saying their availability is a concern common how bigotry you can get ...Kevin Peterson was bought for 1.5 million by Challengersknowing quite well that he wont last the whole IPL and I think on any given day Afridi is much better utility player than Kevin then why didnt Franchises took the same stance for Pakistani player on one hand TOI and JUNG press is carrying out huge campaign to bring the people of rwo countries together and IPL humiliates the pakistan players how ironical.....

  6. Obviously yes, there were 13 slots to be filled and pakistani players were front runner. Atleast shahid afridi, shohial tanvir, umar gul must be expecting slot.
But after not getting any taker they are crying foul.Rajasthan Royal highly benifitted from Sohail tanvir in the title winning 1st season. pakistan is currntly world t20 champion and was also runnerup in t20 2007 world cup, so there record represents the capabilty of pakistani players in t20.
so if they are not getting any franchise, it must be astonishing for them.

  7. I feel that the players feeling betrayed is completely normal, and its sad to see that the game of cricket was converted into a business deal. But then, we cant blame the franchises either cos as Manish has mentioned, they are more business-oriented. Even they would have taken the decision after a lot of considerations. All I can say is that its sad it has happened, but there is no justification in viewing it as a serious issue from the political side.

  8. No,I don't think that the ipl franchisees did any wrong in not picking the pakistani players. After all ipl is as much about money as it about cricket. Moreover in the present scenario a possibility of an untoward incident happening cannot be ruled out and the finger of suspicion will again point at pakistan. This would make the further participation of these cricketers very doubtful. Thus the decision of the franchisees made a lot of business sense.

  9. I am totally agree with what IPL franchises did with pakistani players, because cricket is like a religion for India and when it comes against pakistan it transforms into war and all cricketers becomes warriors of country and playground is becomes battleground. whenever we fought with pakistan we taste only Victory, even we fight like warriors, Pakistan always played role as deceptive player in war and India cant bare it now. This is the first step towards to teach some lessons to them , may be someday they will ignored by whole world from playground of earth if they continue what they are did in past and what they are doing in present. After this step of IPL everyone wants to learn that. It is always good to throw one rotten Mango from basket to keep safe remaining.
On other hand it may be strategy of IPL franchises to keep Indian viewer happy by exempting pak players as National pride to show they didn’t forget 26/11 incident yet.

  10. According to me no it was totally a business decision by the IPL teams. With the current tense situation between Indiaa and Pakistan there may be a visa problem for a pakistani players. What is the use of a player who may not be able to come to India?

  11. Why should one believe the IPL is right or even otherwise? IPL is just another business proposition, out there to compete for a prime time entertainment slot. Please don't take it for a guardian angel of our domestic cricket and the launch pad for youngsters. It is merely in the league of the myriad reality shows, Kyun Ki... series and the likes. Come to think of it, I don't remember news channels questioning Ekta Kapoor for 'snubbing' one actor for the other or the logic(lack of it rather) behind multiple re-births.

If IPL-I made news at the cost of poor ICL guys, IPL-II was blessed with the General elections. How can Mr. Modi let IPL-III to be a silent affair?

These bunch of rich and famous (team owners) are out there amusing themselves with a game of Tambola. The only question which goes unanswered is 'Where did we go wrong?, for reducing our Gods to mere numbers in a gambling game is not being pious, is it?'

    Cheers,
    Gigs

  12. IPL should have not been so unfair in this decision with the pak players..After all players are not heading with armed weapons into the field and its not a war in the ground. Each and every sports lover, including Home minister chidambaram agreed with it.Some even said pakistan over reacted on the issue, what else could a country do when the players of the country who are doing extremely well are just ignored out of the whole game!IPL did snub pakistan or showed great disrespect to The great Pakistan Cricket team and it is really shameful!
