Quiz: Freedom Struggle

Hi Everyone,

A Happy Independence Day to all of you. On this occasion I thought that I would put together a quiz on India’s struggle for independence, our salute to the great men and women who participated in the struggle.

1. Na Iran ne kiya, na Shah Roos ne
Angrez ko tabah kiya kartoos ne

What is this reference to the kartoos as far as the First War of Independence is concerned?
The bullets of the new Enfield rifle were supposedly coated with the fat of pigs and cows. (Both of them anathema to Muslims and Hindus.) And the sepoys were supposed to bite the bullet before being able to use it.

2. What minor but interesting role did Lt. Baugh, Adjutant to the CO of Barrackpore play in India’s independence struggle?
Mangal Pandey severely wounded him on 29th May 1857. This incident is seen as the spark to the First War of Indian Independence.

3. The names of Dr. Saifuddin Kitchlu and Dr. Satyapal will forever be associated with an event in Indian history. What is that event?
Their arrest by the British government in India led to a protest meeting at the Jallianwallah Bagh. The events after that lives on in infamy.

4. Who established the Vanar Sena during the freedom struggle?

5. He launched a systematic criticism of moderate politics while serving as a lecturer in Baroda. He was the editor of the Bande Mataram. He was arrested by the British for his involvement in the Kennedy murders following which he escaped to Pondicherry in 1910 and concentrated on philosophical, spiritual and literary activities. Who is he?
