Good evening Friends,
All of us have some or the other phobia and trust me there are a lot of these phobias going around. Some of these phobias might not even be mentioned in the dictionaries that one uses, but trust me for the people who are suffering from them they are all too real.
But what exactly is a phobia? A Phobia is “A persistent, irrational fear of a specific object, activity, or situation that leads to a compelling desire to avoid it.” It is not just fear, it is an irrational fear.
Let’s take a look at a few unusual phobias around. Also while reading about the phobias see if you can identify the root word (and a few other words that originate from those root words) and mention the same in the “Comments” section.
Here goes:
Deipnophobia - Fear of dining and dinner conversation.
Didaskaleinophobia - Fear of going to school.
Pantophobia - Fear of everything.
Nyctophobia - Fear of the dark or of the night.
And finally,
Caligynephobia - Fear of beautiful women.
I wonder what the cure for this one is!!!
On that slightly disturbing note,
Good night

Here's a couple of interesting phobias.
ReplyDelete1) Triskaidekaphobia : a fear of the number 13
(Greek: tris meaning "3" ,kai meaning "and", deka meaning "10")
It might be interesting to note that even though such a fear might sound silly to most of us, throughout history,in many different civilisations & religions, there has been numerous references to superstition regarding the number 13.
An apartment building in Shanghai whose builder seems to be tetraphobic (fear of no.4) & triskaedophobic does not have nos 4,13 & 14 in the elevator.Check it out !!

2)Paraskevidekatriaphobia : fear of Friday the
13th
(Greek: Paraskevi meaning "Friday", dekatreis meaning "thirteen")
Paradoxically, this is an even more "terrifying" phobia. According to the Stress Management Center and Phobia Institute in Asheville, North Carolina, an estimated 17 to 21 million people in the United States are affected by a fear of this day. It's been estimated that [US]$800 or $900 million is lost in business on this day and there are indications that there are more accidents on Fridays than average weekdays (which may be due to increased alcohol consumption on Fridays).
Every year there will be atleast one Friday the 13th and some even have three. Interestingly 2009 has three such days where 13th Feb,2009 and 13 March,2009 have passed & the third is November 13th 2009. Our dear CAT seems to have luckily just missed the wrath of the PARASKEVIDEKATREIS!!! :)
