Hola Friends,
What with the saturation media coverage of the Swine Flu epidemic (totally pointless in my opinion – but then that is a matter for another post) the word swine has been imprinted on our memory. I thought I would use this situation to talk about an idiom that uses swine. In fact not just swine but the synonyms for swine like hog, pig etc. also have loads of idioms. So here goes …
Cast pearls before swine
To waste something good on someone who doesn't care about it. It is a quotation from the Bible.
Go the whole hog
To proceed or indulge completely and unreservedly.
Live high off/on the hog
To be in prosperous circumstances.
Pig it (Slang)
To live in a pig like fashion.
On the pig's back (Australian Slang)
In a fortunate position.
Like pigs in clover
Extremely contentedly. This expression refers to pigs being allowed to eat as much clover, supposedly their favourite food, as they wish. Usage: “They had a handsome pension and lived like pigs in clover”
On that note,
Adios
