Collective Nouns
Aloha Friends,
Nouns are often categorised into:
- Proper Noun
- Common Noun
- Collective Noun
- Abstract Noun
A Collective Noun refers to a number of persons or things taken together and spoken of as a whole.
The first collection of English collective nouns was put together in 1486 and is traditionally ascribed to Dame Juliana Barnes. Her collection was probably originally written in French, putting together earlier works on the same subject, but Dame Juliana undoubtedly invented several of the terms.
A few of these terms are:
A dole of doves
A turmoil of porpoises
A shoal of minnows
A business of ferrets
A party of jays
An unkindness of ravens (so called because the birds were thought to push their young from the nest to teach them self-sufficiency).
A superfluity of nuns
A prudence of vicars
Collective nouns are also used to make fun of or to praise other groups. For e.g.
A yawn of politicians
An eloquence of lawyers (usually used by lawyers) or A deceit of lawyers (used by everyone else).
There are a lot more such terms. In fact I think there are about 164 such terms put together by Dame Juliana. If you can think of some of them can you add to the collection in the Comments section.

Anagrams
Let’s take a look at anagrams today. An anagram is a word, phrase, or sentence formed from another by rearranging its letters e.g. “Angel” is an anagram of “glean.”
I am giving the rearranged word(s) and the meaning of the original word. You need to work out what the original word is.
Note: If you are submitting the form you need to input your name without fail.
Have fun

Group Discussion - Abstract Topic
Dear Friends,
Quite some vibrant discussions in the previous two discussions, I must say. I have not commented on the first discussion but have done so in the second. However my feedback has been general in nature rather than personal. I will try to give individual feedback as well from now on.
We have had a couple of general topics and I thought that I would add an abstract topic to the mix.
Today’s topic is:
The number of cockroaches in your kitchen represents the economic prosperity of your nation.
Once again looking forward to a high level of participation,
Ciao
Update: (Jan 21 12.03 pm) Some comments posted on the discussion thus far

Group Discussion - General Topic
Hi Folks,
That was a good start to the GD round. At the time of writing this post there are 14 comments on the previous topic. I would of course prefer greater participation but the start is quite good. I am not closing the discussion when another topic is posted so feel free to contribute to the previous discussion(s) too.
Now I want to know from you guys, especially the ones who have already posted and who intend to do so in the future, is how do you want me to participate? If at all…. ;-)
What I mean to ask is:
Do you want me to give you feedback on your comments?
or
Do you want me to participate in the discussion?
or
Do you want me to do neither?
I am fine with any of those roles, particularly the last one. ;-)
Now for today’s topic:
Is the Internet more of a bane than a boon?
Ciao
Update: I have posted my general feedback in the Comments Section. Feel free to revert to me right here in case you want/need something else.
